Vindimas de Lagoa
Wine Festival · September
The Vindimas de Lagoa, the Lagoa grape harvest festival, celebrates the winemaking tradition that has been part of the municipality's identity for centuries. Lagoa is the Algarve's principal wine-producing area, with a cooperative winery founded in 1944 and vineyards that stretch across the limestone barrocal landscape between the coast and the serra.
Algarve wine production has ancient roots. The Romans cultivated vines in the region, and winemaking continued through the Moorish period (despite Islamic prohibitions on alcohol, wine production for Christian and Jewish communities was tolerated) and expanded after the Reconquista. Lagoa's wines were traditionally robust, high-alcohol reds and sweet whites, produced for local consumption rather than export. In recent decades, however, the Algarve wine industry has modernised significantly, with new grape varieties, improved techniques and a focus on quality that has brought regional wines to the attention of national and international markets.
The harvest festival marks the beginning of the vindima, the grape harvest, which typically takes place in September. The festival includes a ceremonial grape-treading in a traditional stone lagar (wine press), accompanied by music, dancing and the consumption of substantial quantities of wine. The symbolic treading, performed by volunteers and dignitaries in bare feet, connects the modern wine industry to its artisanal past.
Wine tastings are central to the programme, with producers from across the Algarve offering samples of their current vintages. The Algarve's four DOC (Denominacao de Origem Controlada) regions, Lagos, Portimao, Lagoa and Tavira, are all represented. Alongside the wines, food stalls serve traditional Algarve dishes that complement the tasting, including grilled meats, cheeses, chourico and bread.
The Vindimas de Lagoa has grown in recent years as the Algarve wine industry has gained recognition. It serves both as a celebration of local tradition and as a marketing opportunity for producers seeking to reach a wider audience. The festival reflects the broader renaissance of Algarve wine, a story of a traditional industry reinventing itself for contemporary tastes.
