Festival Med is a world music and cultural festival held annually in the historic centre of Loule, typically over the last weekend of June. Since its founding in 2004, the festival has grown into one of the Algarve's most distinctive cultural events, combining live music from across the Mediterranean and beyond with dance, theatre, visual arts and a strong emphasis on gastronomy.
The festival takes place in and around the streets, squares and castle walls of Loule's medieval centre, giving it an intimate and atmospheric setting that distinguishes it from larger, stadium-based events. Multiple stages are set up throughout the old town, each hosting a different programme of performances. The musical range is deliberately eclectic, encompassing fado, flamenco, North African rai, Afrobeat, Cape Verdean morna, Brazilian samba, Balkan brass and electronic-acoustic fusion, among other genres. The emphasis is on music rooted in specific cultural traditions but open to cross-pollination and experimentation.
Alongside the music programme, Festival Med features street theatre, contemporary dance performances, art installations and a crafts market where artisans from across the Mediterranean sell their work. The gastronomy programme is a significant draw, with food stalls offering dishes from Portugal, Morocco, Turkey, Greece, Lebanon and other Mediterranean countries, alongside demonstrations by local chefs.
The festival typically attracts 30,000 to 40,000 visitors over its three days, a figure that has grown steadily since the early editions. Audiences include a mix of Portuguese music enthusiasts, Algarve residents and international visitors, giving the event a cosmopolitan atmosphere that reflects its Mediterranean theme. Loule's municipal council is the principal organiser, supported by cultural sponsorship and ticket revenues.
Festival Med has won recognition from the European Festivals Association and has been cited as a model for how smaller cities can use cultural programming to attract visitors, support local businesses and celebrate diversity. For Loule, it has become a defining event that reinforces the town's reputation as one of the Algarve's most culturally vibrant centres.
