The Feira Medieval de Silves is the Algarve's premier historical reenactment event, transforming the town of Silves and its imposing Moorish castle into a recreation of medieval life for ten days each August. First held in 2004, the fair has grown into one of southern Portugal's largest cultural festivals, attracting over 200,000 visitors during its run and establishing Silves firmly on the Algarve's cultural calendar.

The event centres on the red sandstone castle that dominates the hilltop above the Arade River. During the fair, the castle precincts and surrounding streets are populated by performers in period costume, including knights, Moorish soldiers, merchants, craftsmen, musicians and beggars. The reenactment draws on Silves's specific history as the Moorish capital of the Algarve, celebrating the multicultural society of Christians, Muslims and Jews that coexisted in the medieval town.

The fair includes jousting tournaments, falconry displays, fire-eating, acrobatics and theatrical performances staged in the castle courtyard and on platforms throughout the old town. Craft workshops demonstrate traditional skills including blacksmithing, pottery, weaving and leather working. A medieval market sells handmade goods, and food stalls offer dishes prepared according to historical recipes, with an emphasis on roasted meats, bread, honey cakes and spiced wine.

What distinguishes the Feira Medieval de Silves from similar events elsewhere is the quality of its setting. The castle, the winding streets of the old town and the river below provide an authentic backdrop that requires minimal artificial enhancement. The organisers invest in high-quality performances and detailed period accuracy, which has earned the fair recognition as one of Portugal's best medieval reenactment events.

The economic impact on Silves is considerable. Hotels, restaurants and shops in the town and surrounding area benefit from a sharp increase in visitors during the fair, and the event has helped diversify Silves's tourist appeal beyond its role as a day-trip destination for coach parties visiting the castle.
