Festival de Alte
Folk Music · July
The Festival de Alte is a folk music and traditional culture event held in the picturesque village of Alte, nestled in the limestone hills of the barrocal zone north of Loule. The festival celebrates the traditional music, dance and customs of the Algarve, providing a platform for folk groups, musicians and performers who keep alive the region's distinctive cultural heritage.
Alte is one of the Algarve's most attractive villages, with white-washed houses, a spring-fed stream, traditional water mills and a church dating from the 13th century. The village has long been promoted as a showcase of traditional Algarve life, and the folk festival extends this identity into the realm of music and performance.
The programme features performances by rancho folclorico groups from across the Algarve and other parts of Portugal. These groups preserve and perform the traditional songs, dances and costumes of their communities, each with distinctive regional characteristics. Algarve folk music is characterised by its rhythmic vitality, the use of instruments including the harmonica, accordion, guitar and adufe (square tambourine), and lyrics that often draw on themes of rural life, the sea, love and emigration.
Alongside the folk music, the festival includes exhibitions of traditional crafts, including esparto grass weaving, pottery, copperwork and bobbin lace. Local food producers offer traditional Algarve products including almond sweets, fig cakes, carob syrup, honey and medronho (arbutus berry spirit). The combination of music, crafts and food creates an immersive experience of traditional Algarve culture.
The festival is modest in scale compared to events such as Festival Med or the Feira Medieval de Silves, but its authenticity and village setting give it a particular charm. For visitors interested in the Algarve's cultural roots rather than its coastal tourism, the Festival de Alte offers a genuine encounter with the traditions that shaped rural life in the region for centuries.
