The Festa da Ria Formosa celebrates the extraordinary natural lagoon system that stretches along the eastern Algarve coast from Faro to Cacela Velha. The Ria Formosa Natural Park, covering approximately 18,000 hectares of tidal mudflats, salt marshes, sand barrier islands, channels and dunes, is one of the most important wetland habitats in southern Europe and the foundation of the Algarve's shellfish industry. The festival, held annually along the waterfront, brings together the park's ecological significance and its gastronomic bounty.

The Ria Formosa supports a commercial shellfishing industry that has operated for centuries. The lagoon's warm, nutrient-rich waters provide ideal conditions for clams, cockles, oysters and mussels, and the annual harvest supplies restaurants and markets across the Algarve and beyond. The festival showcases this produce in a setting that connects the food directly to its source, with the lagoon visible from the festival site.

Food stalls at the festival offer the full range of Ria Formosa shellfish and seafood, prepared in traditional Algarve styles. Clams a Bulhao Pato (with garlic, coriander and white wine), grilled oysters, seafood rice, octopus salad and fresh sea urchin are among the dishes available. The quality of the ingredients, sourced directly from the lagoon, is the festival's principal selling point.

The programme extends beyond food. Environmental education initiatives highlight the ecological importance of the Ria Formosa, including its role as a habitat for migrating birds, seahorses, chameleons and the endangered purple swamphen. Boat trips into the lagoon are offered, and exhibitions present the park's conservation work. Live music, craft stalls and activities for children round out the programme.
