The 365 Algarve programme is a region-wide cultural initiative launched in 2016 by the Portuguese government's Secretariat of State for Tourism, in partnership with the Algarve's sixteen municipalities and the regional tourism board. Its purpose is to extend the Algarve's cultural calendar beyond the summer peak season, providing a programme of arts events, performances, exhibitions and workshops that runs primarily from October through May.

The programme was conceived in response to a persistent challenge facing the Algarve's tourism industry: extreme seasonality. For decades, the region's visitor numbers have been heavily concentrated in the summer months, with occupancy rates dropping sharply between November and March. This pattern creates economic instability, seasonal unemployment and underuse of cultural and hospitality infrastructure during the winter months. The 365 Algarve programme aims to give visitors a reason to come to the Algarve outside summer by providing a continuous stream of cultural events.

The programme encompasses a wide range of artistic disciplines, including music, theatre, dance, visual arts, cinema, literature and gastronomy. Events take place in all sixteen Algarve municipalities, from large towns such as Faro, Portimao and Lagos to smaller communities in the serra and barrocal. This geographical spread is deliberate, intended to distribute the benefits of cultural tourism across the region rather than concentrating them in a few coastal hotspots.

Typical events include concerts in historic churches and palaces, theatre productions in municipal auditoria, art exhibitions in galleries and public spaces, film screenings, literary talks and gastronomic events that highlight traditional Algarve cuisine and local products. The programme commissions new work from Portuguese and international artists and supports residencies that bring creative practitioners to the Algarve for extended periods.

The programme has achieved measurable results. Off-season visitor numbers have increased since its launch, and participating venues and municipalities report higher attendance and engagement. The 365 Algarve brand has gained recognition in the domestic and international tourism markets, and the programme has been cited as a model for cultural tourism development in peripheral European regions.

For residents, the programme provides access to cultural experiences that would otherwise require travel to Lisbon or Porto. For visitors, it offers an alternative perspective on a region too often reduced to its beaches and golf courses. The 365 Algarve programme represents an investment in the proposition that culture can be a year-round economic driver and a source of identity and pride for the Algarve's communities.
