Vilamoura Marina is the largest pleasure boat harbour in Portugal, with approximately 1,000 berths arranged around a central basin that forms the focal point of this purpose-built resort development. Construction began in the 1970s as part of a masterplan that transformed marshland and pine forest into one of southern Europe's most ambitious tourism projects, and the marina remains its beating heart.

The quayside promenade stretches for nearly two kilometres around the basin, lined with restaurants, bars, designer boutiques and estate agents. On summer evenings the waterfront fills with a cosmopolitan crowd watching the sunset light catch the hulls of moored yachts. The eastern arm of the marina is home to the larger vessels, including superyachts that arrive during the summer season from Gibraltar, the Balearics and the Canary Islands.

Boat tour operators run daily excursions from the marina to the sea caves and grottoes of Albufeira and the marine reserve near the Ilha da Armona. Game fishing charters target bluefin tuna, swordfish and marlin in the deeper waters of the continental shelf. Dolphin-watching trips regularly spot common and bottlenose dolphins in the waters off Quarteira.

Beyond the marina, Vilamoura encompasses five 18-hole golf courses, a casino, an equestrian centre and the Cerro da Vila archaeological site, which preserves the remains of a Roman villa with well-preserved mosaics and a bath complex. The beach at Praia da Marina stretches east towards Quarteira, backed by low cliffs and connected to the marina by a walkway.
