Faro Marina
Marina
Faro Marina occupies a sheltered basin on the northern edge of the Ria Formosa lagoon, within walking distance of the city centre and the old town walls. With around 200 berths, it is smaller than Vilamoura or Lagos but serves as the principal departure point for boat trips into the Ria Formosa Natural Park, making it one of the busiest embarkation points on the coast.
Ferry services and tour boats depart regularly for the barrier islands of Ilha Deserta (Barreta), Ilha da Culatra and Ilha do Farol, each offering long stretches of clean sand backed by dune systems with minimal development. The crossing to Ilha Deserta takes around 40 minutes and lands passengers on what is often cited as one of the most unspoilt beaches in Europe.
The marina's waterfront promenade connects to the Jardim Manuel Bivar, a formal garden facing the harbour, and to the restaurants and cafes that line the Rua Conselheiro Bivar and the pedestrianised Rua de Santo Antonio. The area around the marina has been redeveloped in recent years, with new paving, improved lighting and modern sanitary facilities for visiting yachts.
Faro's position at the eastern end of the Algarve's resort strip means it retains a more authentically Portuguese atmosphere than the towns to the west. The marina reflects this, serving working fishermen and local boat owners alongside visiting yachtsmen and day-trippers. The fuel dock, chandlery and boatyard facilities make it a practical stop for vessels cruising the southern Portuguese coast or making the passage between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
