Algar Seco
Viewpoint
Algar Seco is a dramatic formation of eroded limestone on the coast east of Carvoeiro, where millennia of wave action, wind and chemical weathering have carved the golden rock into arches, tunnels, pools and pinnacles. The site is reached by a short walk from Carvoeiro village or via steps from a clifftop car park, and it rewards exploration at any time of day, though the late afternoon light brings out the warmest tones in the stone.
The centrepiece is a pair of natural windows, openings in the rock through which the sea is framed like a painting. Below, a natural swimming pool fills and empties with the tide, creating a sheltered bathing spot on calm days. The rock formations extend along the shoreline in both directions, and walkways, steps and handrails have been installed to provide safe access to the most scenic viewpoints.
A clifftop bar, the Boneca Bar, occupies a prime position overlooking the formations and has been serving drinks to visitors for decades. Its terrace offers arguably the best seats on this stretch of coast, with an uninterrupted view across the rock formations to the open sea. Sunset here is a popular experience, and tables fill quickly during the summer months.
The geological processes that created Algar Seco are ongoing. The limestone that forms this coastline is relatively soft and porous, and erosion continues to reshape the formations with every storm. Caves collapse, new arches form, and sea stacks gradually topple. The landscape is quite literally different from decade to decade, and structures that stood in living memory have since disappeared beneath the waves.
