Benagil Cave Viewpoint

The clifftop viewpoint above the Algar de Benagil provides a striking aerial perspective into one of the most photographed natural formations in Portugal. The cave, carved by wave action into the golden limestone cliffs between Carvoeiro and Armacao de Pera, features a massive circular opening in its roof through which sunlight pours onto a small beach far below. From the clifftop, visitors can look directly down through this oculus into the cave's interior.

The viewpoint is reached by a short walk along the cliff path from the Benagil beach car park. The path is informal and unfenced in places, running close to the cliff edge, so care is needed, particularly with children. The opening is roughly 20 metres across and drops approximately 15 metres to the cave floor. On calm days, the turquoise water inside the cave is visible through the hole, along with any kayakers or swimmers who have entered from the sea.

Benagil beach itself is small and hemmed in by cliffs, accessible via a steep path. The cave cannot be reached on foot from the beach; visitors must swim, kayak or take a boat tour from one of the neighbouring beaches. Tour operators in Carvoeiro, Benagil and Armacao de Pera run regular trips, and kayak rental is available at several points along the coast.

The cliff path in both directions offers further viewpoints over the coastline's extraordinary geology. Sea stacks, arches, grottoes and blowholes punctuate the shoreline, and the golden colour of the limestone against the deep blue sea creates a landscape that looks almost unreal in the afternoon light. This stretch of coast, sometimes called the Golden Triangle, is the Algarve's most scenically dramatic.
