Southern Portugal's Atlantic Coast

Yoga Retreats

Health & Wellness

The Algarve has established itself as one of Europe's leading destinations for yoga retreats, drawing practitioners from across the continent and beyond. The combination of year-round sunshine, a mild climate, stunning natural settings and a growing community of experienced teachers has created a thriving yoga scene that caters to beginners and advanced practitioners alike.

The western Algarve, particularly the area around Aljezur, Lagos and the Costa Vicentina, has the highest concentration of yoga retreat centres. The wild Atlantic coast, the unspoilt countryside and the area's association with alternative lifestyles have made this part of the region a natural base for yoga and wellness operators. Retreat centres are typically housed in converted farmsteads (quintas), rural villas or purpose-built facilities set in countryside or coastal locations.

Retreat formats vary widely. Short weekend retreats offer an intensive introduction or a focused deepening of practice over two to three days. Week-long retreats, the most popular format, typically combine daily morning and evening yoga sessions with meditation, free time for beach visits and excursions, healthy meals and optional complementary activities such as surfing, hiking or cooking workshops. Longer residential retreats and teacher training programmes (200-hour and 500-hour YTT courses) are also available.

The styles of yoga taught in the Algarve span the full spectrum. Vinyasa flow, hatha, ashtanga, yin, restorative, kundalini and aerial yoga are all offered by different retreat centres and teachers. Many retreats combine multiple styles, offering dynamic morning sessions and gentler, restorative evening practices. Meditation, breathwork (pranayama) and sound healing are common complementary elements.

The surf and yoga combination is a distinctive Algarve offering. Several operators in the western Algarve run retreats that combine morning yoga sessions with afternoon surf lessons on the Atlantic beaches. The physical complementarity of surfing and yoga, and the shared emphasis on presence, breath and connection with nature, has made this a popular format.

Accommodation at yoga retreats ranges from simple shared rooms to private suites with en-suite bathrooms. Most retreats provide all meals, typically vegetarian or vegan, using local organic produce where possible. The emphasis on healthy, locally sourced food is a significant part of the retreat experience.

Prices for Algarve yoga retreats vary according to accommodation standard, retreat length and the reputation of the teachers involved. A week-long retreat with shared accommodation typically costs between 600 and 1,200 euros, while premium retreats with private accommodation and additional services can cost 1,500 to 3,000 euros or more.

Beyond dedicated retreat centres, drop-in yoga classes are available in towns across the Algarve, including Faro, Lagos, Portimao, Tavira and Loule. Many classes cater to the international community and are taught in English or bilingually.
