Spas and Thermal Baths
Health & Wellness
The Algarve has a long tradition of therapeutic bathing, anchored by the thermal springs of Caldas de Monchique and supplemented by a growing number of modern spa facilities in the region's hotels and resorts. Whether seeking traditional hydrotherapy, contemporary wellness treatments or simply a few hours of relaxation, the Algarve offers options across a wide range of budgets and styles.
Caldas de Monchique is the historic heart of the Algarve's spa tradition. The thermal springs in this small, shaded village in the foothills of the Serra de Monchique have been used since Roman times, and possibly earlier. The naturally warm, alkaline water, which emerges at approximately 32 degrees Celsius, is rich in minerals including sodium bicarbonate and fluoride. It has traditionally been used to treat respiratory conditions, rheumatic complaints and skin conditions.
The restored spa complex at Caldas de Monchique, part of the Monchique Resort, offers a range of hydrotherapy treatments using the thermal water. These include immersion baths, Vichy showers, jet treatments and drinking cures. The spa also provides conventional wellness treatments including massage, facials and body wraps. The village setting, surrounded by wooded hillsides and the sound of running water, adds to the therapeutic atmosphere.
The bottled water from the Caldas de Monchique spring is sold throughout Portugal under the Monchique brand. The water's unusually high pH (approximately 9.5) has made it popular with health-conscious consumers.
Beyond Caldas de Monchique, the Algarve's spa offer is concentrated in the resort hotels of the coastal strip. Many of the region's five-star hotels operate substantial spa facilities, often themed around local ingredients such as sea salt, algae, carob, almond oil and fig. The Pine Cliffs Resort near Albufeira, the Conrad Algarve in Quinta do Lago, and the Vila Vita Parc near Porches all operate award-winning spas.
Thalassotherapy, which uses seawater, marine algae and coastal climate as therapeutic agents, is offered at several Algarve hotels and dedicated wellness centres. The concept has a strong tradition in Portugal, and the Algarve's clean coastal waters and marine environment provide ideal conditions.
Day spas and independent treatment centres in towns such as Faro, Lagos, Tavira and Vilamoura offer accessible wellness options for visitors not staying at spa hotels. Treatments range from traditional Portuguese massage techniques to international modalities including Thai massage, reflexology, aromatherapy and Ayurvedic treatments.
The Algarve's mild climate, clean air, proximity to the sea and slower pace of life provide a natural foundation for wellness tourism. The combination of physical treatments, outdoor activities, fresh local food and the region's characteristic tranquillity attracts a growing number of visitors for whom health and wellbeing are primary motivations for travel.
