More recently, padel, the fast-growing racquet sport that combines elements of tennis and squash, has exploded in popularity, and padel courts are now appearing at a remarkable rate throughout the Algarve. Together, these two sports offer active visitors and residents a year-round option for exercise and competition in the region's reliable sunshine.

The major resorts in the central Algarve provide the most extensive tennis facilities. The Vilamoura Tennis Centre has a dozen courts, including clay, hard and artificial grass surfaces, and offers coaching for all ages and abilities. Pine Cliffs Resort near Albufeira has five courts with views over the sea and a resident coaching team. Vale do Lobo has a tennis academy with nine courts and a structured programme of group and individual lessons. These resort facilities typically charge 15 to 30 euros per hour for court hire, with coaching available at additional cost.

Municipal tennis courts exist in most Algarve towns, including Lagos, Portimao, Albufeira, Faro, Tavira and Olhao. These are generally less polished than the resort facilities but significantly cheaper, with court hire often costing five to ten euros per hour. Surfaces are usually hard courts, and floodlighting is available at most municipal facilities, allowing evening play during the hotter months when daytime temperatures make outdoor sport uncomfortable.

Padel has been the fastest-growing sport in Portugal over the past five years, reflecting a trend that started in Spain and has swept across southern Europe and Latin America. The sport is played on an enclosed court roughly one-third the size of a tennis court, with glass walls that are part of the playing area. The ball can be played off the walls, creating extended rallies and a dynamic, social game that is easier to pick up than tennis but tactically rich at higher levels.

Padel courts have proliferated across the Algarve. Dedicated padel clubs have opened in Vilamoura, Albufeira, Lagos, Portimao and Faro, and many existing tennis clubs have added padel courts to meet demand. The typical padel facility offers four to eight courts, equipment hire, coaching and a social area where players gather before and after games. Court hire costs between 10 and 20 euros per hour, split between four players, making it an affordable activity.

For visitors wanting to try padel for the first time, most clubs offer introductory sessions that cover the basic rules, grip, serve and key shots. A typical beginner session lasts 90 minutes and costs 20 to 30 euros per person including racquet hire. The sport's lower barrier to entry compared with tennis, combined with its inherently social format of four players on court, makes it accessible and enjoyable from the first session.

The Algarve also hosts professional and amateur tennis and padel events throughout the year. The region's climate makes it a popular winter training destination for professional tennis players, and the facilities at the top resorts attract touring players and coaches. Amateur tennis tournaments are held at various clubs during the season, and padel leagues have been established in several towns, providing regular competitive play for residents.

Playing tennis or padel in the Algarve's summer heat requires some adjustments. Early morning or late afternoon court bookings avoid the most intense sun. Hydration before, during and after play is essential. Wearing a hat and sunscreen is important even in the cooler months, when UV levels can still be significant. Indoor padel courts, available at some newer facilities, provide an air-conditioned alternative during the hottest periods.

For residents and long-term visitors, joining a tennis or padel club provides access to regular play, social events and competitive leagues. Annual membership at Algarve clubs typically costs 200 to 500 euros, which includes court booking privileges and access to club facilities. The social aspect of club membership is significant, particularly for expatriates seeking to build a community, and the Algarve's clubs are generally welcoming to newcomers.
