The Algarve is one of Europe's premier golf destinations, with over 40 courses spread across the region from Lagos in the west to Tavira in the east. The combination of year-round sunshine, mild winters, high-quality course design and well-developed infrastructure has made the region a magnet for golfers from across northern Europe, particularly from the United Kingdom, Germany, Scandinavia and the Netherlands. Golf tourism is a significant economic driver for the Algarve, generating an estimated 500 million euros annually and supporting thousands of jobs.

The modern golf era in the Algarve began in 1966, when Sir Henry Cotton designed the Old Course at Penina, near Portimao. Cotton, a three-time Open Championship winner, saw the potential of the Algarve's climate and landscape for golf and created a championship course on flat rice paddy land that he transformed with extensive tree planting. Penina remains a respected venue, though it no longer ranks among the region's top courses. The development of Vilamoura in the 1970s and 1980s, with its cluster of courses, marina and resort infrastructure, established the Algarve as a mainstream golf holiday destination.

Today, the main concentration of courses lies in the central Algarve between Albufeira and Faro. The Vilamoura complex alone has five courses: the Old Course, a mature layout winding through umbrella pines; the Victoria Course, a modern Arnold Palmer design that has hosted the Portugal Masters on the European Tour; the Millennium Course, with wide fairways suited to higher handicappers; the Pinhal Course, a technical challenge set among pine forests; and the Laguna Course, routed around lakes and wetlands. Green fees at Vilamoura range from around 70 to 180 euros depending on the course, time of year and time of day.

The Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo resorts, adjacent to Vilamoura, add further world-class options. Quinta do Lago has three courses, including the South Course, which has hosted multiple Portuguese Opens and is consistently ranked among the best in continental Europe. The North Course and Laranjal Course offer contrasting challenges, the former through pine forests and the latter around orange groves and lakes. Vale do Lobo's Royal Course features the famous par-three 16th hole, played over dramatic red cliffs to a green perched above the sea.

West of Albufeira, Amendoeira Golf Resort near Silves has two 18-hole courses designed by Nick Faldo and Christy O'Connor Jr. respectively. Palmares, near Lagos, offers ocean views from many of its holes and is widely regarded as one of the most scenic courses in the Algarve. Espiche, also near Lagos, is a newer course that has quickly earned a strong reputation for its condition and design.

In the eastern Algarve, the courses are fewer but growing in number and quality. Monte Rei, near Tavira, is a Jack Nicklaus-designed course that has been ranked as the best in Portugal by several publications. Green fees reflect its status, at around 200 to 300 euros per round. Quinta da Ria and Quinta de Cima, twin courses near the Spanish border, offer excellent value and attractive settings along the Ria Formosa.

The Algarve golf season runs year-round, but the peak months are October to May, when northern European golfers escape the cold and wet conditions at home. Summer green fees are often significantly lower, but temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius can make midday golf uncomfortable. The shoulder seasons of March-April and October-November offer the best combination of pleasant temperatures, lower prices and good course conditions.

Booking golf in the Algarve can be done directly through course websites or through specialist golf holiday operators who package flights, accommodation, transfers and tee times. These operators often have access to discounted green fees, particularly for groups. Many courses offer twilight rates from mid-afternoon at reduced prices, and multi-round passes provide savings for golfers planning several games during a stay.

Equipment hire is available at all major courses, with a full set of modern clubs typically costing 30 to 50 euros per round. Electric buggies cost 40 to 60 euros, and many courses require buggies during the hotter months or on longer layouts. Caddies are available at some of the premium courses by prior arrangement.
