Taxi and Ride-Sharing
Transport
Taxis are a practical transport option in the Algarve, particularly for airport transfers, journeys between towns and late-night travel when buses and trains are not running. The taxi system in Portugal is regulated, with metered fares and identifiable vehicles, though understanding how it works can help avoid misunderstandings.
Algarve taxis are typically cream or beige coloured (some older vehicles are black with a green roof) and display a "TAXI" sign on the roof. Licensed taxis are fitted with meters and display their licence number and fare table. Taxis can be hailed on the street, found at taxi ranks (pracas de taxis) outside railway stations, bus stations, airports, hospitals and in town centres, or booked by phone through local taxi companies.
Fares are metered and regulated. The meter starts at approximately 3.25 euros during the day (Tarifa 1, 6:00 to 21:00) and 3.90 euros at night and on weekends/holidays (Tarifa 2). The per-kilometre rate is approximately 0.47 euros (Tarifa 1) or 0.56 euros (Tarifa 2). There are additional charges for luggage placed in the boot (approximately 1.60 euros) and for journeys that cross municipal boundaries.
As a rough guide to costs: a taxi from Faro Airport to central Faro costs approximately 10 to 15 euros, to Albufeira approximately 45 to 55 euros, to Lagos approximately 70 to 85 euros and to Tavira approximately 30 to 40 euros. These are approximate figures and will vary with traffic conditions and time of day.
Uber operates in the Algarve and provides an alternative to traditional taxis. The app works in the same way as elsewhere, with prices displayed before booking and payment handled through the app. Uber availability can be limited in rural areas and during off-peak hours, but in and around the larger towns (Faro, Albufeira, Lagos, Portimao, Tavira) the service is generally reliable. Bolt, another ride-hailing app, also operates in the region.
Pre-booked transfer services offer fixed-price door-to-door transport, particularly popular for airport transfers. Several companies operate in the Algarve, and transfers can be booked online in advance. This eliminates uncertainty about costs and is particularly convenient for families with luggage or groups.
For visitors without a car, taxis and ride-sharing services fill the gaps left by the public transport network, particularly for beach access, restaurant trips and late-evening travel. Combining public transport for longer journeys with taxis for the last mile is a cost-effective strategy.
