Bus Services

Transport

Bus services in the Algarve provide an extensive network connecting towns, villages, beaches and transport hubs across the region. While not as convenient as having a car, the bus network is a viable and affordable option for visitors willing to plan around timetables and accept that some routes are infrequent, particularly outside the summer season.

The primary bus operator in the Algarve is Vamus Algarve (formerly Eva Transportes and part of the Proximo group). Vamus operates the majority of intercity and interurban routes across the region, connecting all the major towns and many smaller settlements. The company's services range from express routes between major centres to local stopping services that wind through villages and housing areas.

The main bus stations (rodoviarias or terminais) are in Faro, Lagos, Portimao, Albufeira, Tavira, Loule and Vila Real de Santo Antonio. Faro's bus station, located adjacent to the railway station, serves as the region's principal transport hub, with services departing for destinations across the Algarve and beyond.

Express services (Expresso) connect the Algarve's main towns with relatively fast journey times. Faro to Lagos takes approximately 1 hour 45 minutes by express, while Faro to Tavira takes about 1 hour. Local services are slower, following more circuitous routes through smaller settlements.

Fares are affordable. A single ticket from Faro to Lagos costs approximately 6 to 7 euros, and from Faro to Albufeira approximately 4 euros. Tickets can be purchased at bus stations, from the driver on boarding, or through the Vamus website and app. Return tickets offer a small discount on some routes.

Service frequency varies significantly by route and season. The main coastal corridor between Lagos and Faro is relatively well served, with multiple daily departures. Routes to inland destinations such as Silves, Monchique and the mountain villages are less frequent, sometimes with only two or three services per day. During the summer months (June to September), additional services are often added on popular tourist routes, including beach shuttle services.

Rede Expressos, Portugal's national long-distance coach operator, provides services between the Algarve and Lisbon, Porto and other Portuguese cities. The Faro to Lisbon express takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours, with multiple daily departures. Tickets can be booked online through the Rede Expressos website.

FlixBus and other international coach operators provide connections from the Algarve to destinations in Spain and beyond, including Seville, Madrid and other European cities.

For visitors without a car, a combination of bus and train services, supplemented by taxis or ride-sharing for the last mile, can provide reasonable mobility around the Algarve, though it requires patience and planning.
