Sailing and Yacht Charter
Golf & Sport
The Algarve's coastline, with its reliable winds, warm waters and well-equipped marinas, provides an excellent base for sailing, whether that means a day trip on a chartered yacht, a week-long bareboat cruise or learning to sail from scratch. The south coast offers sheltered sailing in generally moderate conditions, while the west coast and the offshore waters towards the Strait of Gibraltar provide more challenging sailing for experienced crews.
The main sailing hubs in the Algarve are the marinas at Lagos, Portimao, Vilamoura and Faro. Lagos marina, located in the heart of the old town, is one of the most attractive in Portugal and has excellent facilities including fuel, water, electricity, showers, a travel lift and a chandlery. Vilamoura marina, the largest in the Algarve with around 1,000 berths, is a full-service facility surrounded by restaurants, shops and a bustling waterfront. Portimao marina and Faro marina complete the quartet of principal marinas, each offering secure berthing and good access to the coast.
Chartering a sailing yacht for a day trip is one of the most pleasant ways to see the Algarve coast. Day charters typically depart in the morning, sail along the cliffs and beaches, stop for swimming and snorkelling in sheltered coves, and return in the late afternoon. A skippered day charter on a 12 to 15 metre sailing yacht for up to eight people costs between 500 and 1200 euros, depending on the vessel and time of year. The price usually includes the skipper, fuel, snorkelling equipment and drinks. Some operators offer sunset sailing, a shorter two to three hour trip that combines a coastal sail with wine and snacks as the sun drops below the horizon.
Bareboat charter, where an experienced skipper hires a yacht without crew and sails independently, is available from several operators in the Algarve. Charterers need to demonstrate competence, typically by holding an RYA Day Skipper certificate or equivalent. Yacht sizes range from 30 to 50 feet, and weekly rates vary from around 1500 euros for a smaller, older yacht in low season to 5000 euros or more for a newer, larger vessel in peak summer. The most popular bareboat itinerary is the Algarve coast from Lagos to Faro, with overnight stops in Portimao, Albufeira and Vilamoura, though more adventurous sailors can cross to the Algarve from Lisbon, explore the Portuguese islands of Madeira and the Azores, or sail to Morocco or the Canary Islands.
Sailing schools in the Algarve offer courses from beginner to advanced levels. RYA-accredited training centres operate from Lagos and Vilamoura, offering the full range of RYA sailing qualifications including Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster. A five-day RYA Day Skipper practical course typically costs between 800 and 1200 euros, including accommodation on the yacht and meals. Portuguese sailing schools offer equivalent qualifications under the Portuguese sailing federation's framework.
Wind conditions in the Algarve are generally benign on the south coast, with a reliable thermal breeze building from the northwest during summer afternoons, known locally as the nortada. This wind typically blows at 10 to 18 knots, occasionally gusting to 25 knots, and provides comfortable sailing conditions for yachts of all sizes. The west coast receives stronger, more unpredictable winds, and the sea state can be rougher due to the exposure to Atlantic swells. Sailing around Cape St Vincent from the south to the west coast or vice versa requires careful planning, as the cape can generate confused seas and accelerated winds.
The Algarve's sailing season runs year-round, though winter can bring periods of unsettled weather with rain, stronger winds and reduced visibility. The most reliable sailing months are May to October, with June to September being the peak period for charter activity. Water temperatures are comfortable for swimming from June to October, ranging from 18 to 23 degrees Celsius.
For those interested in competitive sailing, the Algarve hosts several regattas and sailing events throughout the year. The Lagos sailing club organises regular racing for dinghies and keelboats, and international events occasionally visit the Algarve. The region's sailing community is active and welcoming, and crew opportunities for experienced sailors are often available through marina notice boards and online forums.
