Zoomarine is a marine-themed amusement park located near Guia, between Albufeira and Lagoa, and is one of the Algarve's most popular family attractions. Opened in 1991, the park combines marine animal presentations, water rides, swimming pools, an aquarium, and educational exhibits across a large, well-landscaped site of roughly 15 hectares. It operates seasonally, typically from March through to October, with peak attendance during the summer months when the park can receive several thousand visitors per day.
The park's headline attractions are its marine animal presentations, which feature dolphins, sea lions, seals, and tropical birds. The dolphin show, held in a large purpose-built stadium-style arena with seating for over a thousand spectators, is the most popular and involves trained bottlenose dolphins performing synchronised jumps, spins, and other behaviours alongside their handlers. Zoomarine has positioned these presentations as educational rather than purely entertainment-focused, with narration explaining dolphin biology, social behaviour, conservation challenges, and the park's own rehabilitation work with stranded marine animals found along the Portuguese coast. The park also offers dolphin interaction experiences for an additional fee, allowing participants to enter the water with the animals under the supervision of trained staff.
The aquarium section houses a range of marine and freshwater species, including sharks, rays, tropical fish, jellyfish, and seahorses, displayed in themed tanks representing different ocean environments from tropical reefs to the deep Atlantic. A separate birds of prey display features trained eagles, hawks, and falcons in flying demonstrations that explain the hunting techniques and ecological roles of each species. The park's 4D cinema shows short films with motion seats and environmental effects including wind and water spray, providing another non-water-based diversion.
Zoomarine's amusement ride section includes water slides, a wave pool, a lazy river, splash pads, and several fairground-style rides including a Ferris wheel, dodgems, and a pirate ship, giving it a broader appeal than a pure marine park. The grounds are extensive and include large grassed areas with sun loungers, multiple restaurants and snack bars offering a mix of Portuguese and international food, and shaded picnic zones. The park is designed to fill a full day, and most families find that a single visit from opening to closing is sufficient to see the major shows and experience the rides and pools.
The park has attracted criticism from animal welfare organisations regarding the keeping of dolphins in captivity, a debate common to marine parks internationally. Zoomarine has responded by highlighting its role in marine animal rescue and rehabilitation, including its work with stranded sea turtles and cetaceans, and its breeding programmes. The park publishes annual reports on its conservation activities. Tickets are available online at reduced rates, and the park is accessible from all the major Algarve resorts within a 30-minute drive. The park's location near Guia is central within the Algarve, making it accessible from both the western and eastern ends of the coast. Free parking is provided on site, and the grounds are landscaped with Mediterranean plantings that give the park a more attractive setting than the concrete surroundings typical of many amusement parks. Family packages combining entry with meals are available and can represent good value during the peak summer season.
