Slide & Splash
Theme park
Slide and Splash is the Algarve's largest water park, located on the EN125 road near Lagoa, roughly midway between Portimao and Albufeira. Opened in 1986, it was one of the first major water parks in southern Europe and has expanded steadily over the decades to become a substantial attraction covering approximately 7 hectares. The park draws over 300,000 visitors annually and operates during the summer season, typically from May or June through to September, with exact dates varying slightly from year to year.
The park features over 25 water slides and rides catering to a range of ages and thrill levels. The flagship attractions include the Black Hole, a fully enclosed tube slide through complete darkness; the Kamikaze, a near-vertical speed slide reaching high velocities; the Big Wave, a wave-simulation pool; and the Tornado, a funnel slide that sends riders spinning around a large cone before dropping them into the pool below. More recent additions have included multi-person raft rides and mat-racer slides that allow groups of up to six to compete side by side down parallel lanes. The park also maintains dedicated children's areas with gentler slides, shallow pools, and interactive water play features suitable for younger visitors.
Beyond the water rides, Slide and Splash includes a number of animal-related attractions and shows that provide variety during a full-day visit. The Birds of Prey Show features trained raptors, including eagles, hawks, and owls, in flying demonstrations that loop over the audience's heads. A separate presentation involves tropical birds and parrots performing trained behaviours. The park also houses a small aquarium displaying species native to the Portuguese coast and a reptile exhibit featuring lizards, snakes, and tortoises. These diversions offer respite from the slides for visitors wanting a break from the water.
Facilities include multiple restaurants and snack bars serving a mix of international and Portuguese food, sunbed and parasol rental areas, changing rooms with lockers, and a shop selling swimwear and sun protection products. The park operates a cashless wristband payment system within the grounds, charged against a pre-loaded balance. Queues for the most popular slides can be significant during the peak weeks of July and August, particularly during the early afternoon, and visitors aiming for shorter waits may find that arriving at opening time or visiting on weekday mornings offers a more comfortable experience.
Slide and Splash has won multiple industry awards over the years, including recognition from TripAdvisor and the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions. It competes with Aquashow near Quarteira and Zoomarine near Albufeira as one of the Algarve's principal family attractions. Tickets can be purchased online in advance, often at a meaningful discount compared to gate prices, and the park is accessible by car from all the major coastal resorts within 20 to 40 minutes. The park's location near Lagoa places it within easy reach of the coastal cave tours that depart from nearby Benagil and Carvoeiro, making it possible to combine a morning water park visit with an afternoon boat trip. Free parking is available on site, and the grounds include shaded areas with grass where visitors can set up picnic spots between rides.
