Paderne Castle Loop

The Paderne Castle Loop is a short, satisfying walk that combines a riverside section along the Ribeira de Quarteira with a visit to the ruins of a Moorish castle that stands on a hilltop overlooking the valley. The route is one of the most accessible interior walks in the Algarve, requiring no special fitness or equipment, and is close enough to the central coast resorts to serve as a morning or afternoon excursion from Albufeira, Vilamoura or Faro.
Paderne Castle, the Castelo de Paderne, is a twelfth-century Almohad fortification built of taipa, a form of rammed earth construction that was the standard military building technique of the Moorish Algarve. The castle was captured by the Portuguese Order of Santiago in 1248 during the Christian reconquest and subsequently abandoned as a military position when the frontier moved southward. Over the following centuries it fell into ruin, and today only the perimeter walls, a corner tower and the remains of a small chapel survive. The castle is depicted on the Portuguese coat of arms, appearing as one of seven castles on the national flag and shield, which gives it a symbolic importance far exceeding its modest physical presence.
The walk begins at a small car park signed from the EN395, the old road between Albufeira and Loulé. From the car park, a path descends through olive groves and scrubland to the Ribeira de Quarteira, a small river that flows south from the hills towards the coast. The river is crossed by a medieval single-arch bridge, the Ponte de Paderne, which is itself a listed monument and a photogenic feature of the walk. In winter and spring the river runs clear and strong; in summer it can be reduced to a chain of pools separated by dry stretches of riverbed.
From the bridge, the trail turns upstream and follows the north bank of the river through dense riparian vegetation of oleander, willow, fig and reed. The path is shaded for much of this section, making it comfortable even in the heat of summer. Birdlife along the river includes kingfishers, grey wagtails, cetti's warblers and, in summer, bee-eaters whose distinctive call carries across the valley.
After approximately one and a half kilometres, the path climbs away from the river and ascends to the castle, which occupies a commanding position on a bluff above the confluence of the Ribeira de Quarteira with a tributary stream. The approach from below allows the taipa walls to be appreciated in context, their reddish-brown colour blending with the surrounding earth and rock. An interpretation panel at the entrance explains the castle's history and its place in the reconquest narrative.
The castle interior is open and unroofed, and visitors can walk the circuit of the walls, examining the construction technique and the layout of the former garrison. The views from the walls extend across the river valley and the surrounding agricultural countryside, a patchwork of olive groves, almond orchards and fallow fields. The small chapel within the walls, the Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Assuncao, retains fragments of its original structure and is the subject of ongoing archaeological investigation.
The return leg of the loop follows a dirt track along the south side of the valley, passing through a more open landscape of carob and almond trees before descending back to the river and the bridge. The total circuit is approximately five kilometres and takes around one and a half to two hours at a relaxed pace, including time to explore the castle.
The walk is suitable for families with children and is manageable for anyone of reasonable mobility. Sturdy shoes are recommended for the rocky sections around the castle, but walking boots are not essential. There are no facilities on the route, so water should be carried. The nearest village, Paderne, is a few kilometres north and has cafes and a supermarket.
