Alte to Queda do Vigario

Alte is one of the most photographed villages in the interior Algarve, a cluster of whitewashed houses with painted borders and tiled facades arranged on a hillside above a small river valley. The village has been carefully maintained and is often presented as an exemplar of traditional Algarve architecture, with its church, its narrow cobbled lanes, its hand-painted chimneys and its shaded central square where old men sit beneath the trees. The walk from Alte to the Queda do Vigario waterfall and back is a gentle, scenic loop that connects the village to its most attractive natural feature and provides an easy half-day outing for visitors based on the coast.
The walk begins in the village centre, near the sixteenth-century parish church of Nossa Senhora da Assuncao, which has an attractive Manueline portal and a series of eighteenth-century azulejo tile panels inside depicting scenes from the Bible. From the church, a lane descends to the Fonte Pequena, a natural spring at the foot of the village that feeds a series of stone tanks and channels once used for washing clothes and irrigating gardens. The spring area is shaded by plane trees and has a cafe with terrace seating, making it a pleasant place to pause before or after the walk.
From Fonte Pequena, the path follows the stream valley eastward through a landscape of fig trees, carob trees, almond orchards and low stone walls. The valley floor is cultivated in places, with vegetable plots and citrus groves irrigated by channels fed from the stream. The path is well-trodden and easy to follow, though not formally waymarked on all sections, and rises gently through the valley.
After approximately two kilometres, the trail reaches the Fonte Grande, a larger spring and bathing area where the stream is dammed to create a natural swimming pool. In summer, local families use the pool, and the shade of the surrounding trees makes it an attractive resting spot. A picnic area with tables and benches is maintained by the parish council.
Continuing upstream, the path climbs gradually through denser vegetation, passing old watermills and abandoned agricultural terraces that speak to a time when this valley supported a much larger working population. The Queda do Vigario, literally the Vicar's Waterfall, is reached after approximately four kilometres from the village. The waterfall is a modest cascade that drops several metres over a rock face into a pool below. It is at its most impressive in the winter and spring months when rainfall has charged the watercourse; in the driest summer months, the flow can reduce to a trickle.
The pool at the base of the waterfall is deep enough for swimming in the wetter months and is a popular spot with locals. The surrounding area is shaded by willows and oleanders, and the sound of running water in an otherwise silent landscape gives the place a meditative quality.
The return to Alte follows a parallel path on the opposite side of the valley, passing through olive groves and open hillside with views back across the village and the surrounding countryside. The total distance is approximately eight kilometres, and the walking time is around two to two and a half hours at a relaxed pace. The terrain is gentle throughout, with no significant steep sections, making the route suitable for families with children and walkers of all fitness levels.
Alte is approximately twenty minutes by road from Albufeira and thirty minutes from Faro, making it an easy excursion from the coast. The village has a handful of restaurants serving traditional Algarve cooking, including chicken piri-piri and cataplana, and a small crafts market operates on the first Saturday of each month. The combination of the village, the springs, the valley walk and the waterfall makes Alte one of the most satisfying half-day outings in the interior Algarve.
