Tavira Municipal Market
Market
The Mercado Municipal de Tavira sits on the south bank of the River Gilao, a short walk from the Roman bridge and the old town centre. The modern market building replaced an older structure in 2000 and houses stalls selling fresh fish, meat, fruit, vegetables, flowers, bread and local produce in a bright, airy hall that opens early each morning.
The fish section reflects Tavira's status as one of the Algarve's most important fishing ports. Tuna has been the town's signature catch for centuries, and the almadrava tuna traps that once operated off the coast are documented in the town's museums. Today, the market's fishmongers sell the daily catch landed at the nearby port of Santa Luzia and from the boats that work the waters around the Ria Formosa islands.
The produce stalls display the fruits of the eastern Algarve's agricultural hinterland: figs, almonds, carobs, pomegranates, citrus fruits and olives. Local honey, goat's cheese, cured sausages and the sweet potato and almond cakes that are traditional to the region occupy smaller stalls. Vendors of herbs, spices, dried flowers and household goods fill the outer ring of the market.
The market's riverside location makes it a natural starting point for a morning exploring Tavira. The building's first-floor terrace offers views across the river, and several cafes on the ground floor serve coffee and pastries alongside the market traders. A rooftop restaurant operates during the warmer months. The Saturday morning market is the busiest, when farmers from the surrounding countryside bring in their weekly harvests.
