Quinta de Marim
Park
Quinta de Marim is a 60-hectare estate on the eastern edge of Olhao that serves as the administrative headquarters and principal visitor centre for the Ria Formosa Natural Park. The property encompasses a cross-section of the habitats found within the park, including salt marsh, tidal creek, sand dune, freshwater lagoon, pine woodland and scrubland, all accessible via a network of well-maintained trails.
The trails are flat and clearly marked, with interpretive panels in Portuguese and English explaining the ecology of each habitat zone. A typical circuit takes around 90 minutes and passes through woodland where chameleons hide in the undergrowth, past ponds where terrapins bask on logs, and along boardwalks over the salt marsh where wading birds feed at low tide. Birdwatching hides are positioned at strategic points around the lagoons.
The estate includes a working tide mill, one of the few remaining examples of a technology that once operated at dozens of sites around the Ria Formosa. The mill uses the incoming tide to fill a reservoir, then channels the outgoing water through a wheel to grind grain. Demonstrations are given periodically, and the mill building houses a small exhibition on tidal energy.
A breeding programme for the Portuguese water dog is maintained on site, preserving a breed that was historically used by Algarvian fishermen to herd fish into nets, retrieve tackle from the water and carry messages between boats. The dogs can be seen in their kennels near the visitor centre. Quinta de Marim also includes a rehabilitation centre for injured wild birds, where patients are nursed back to health before release into the park.
