Caldas de Monchique Gardens
Park
Caldas de Monchique is a thermal spa village nestled in a wooded valley below the town of Monchique, surrounded by eucalyptus, cork oak, chestnut and pine forest. The mineral springs here have been used for therapeutic bathing since Roman times, and the spa was developed as a fashionable resort in the nineteenth century under the patronage of the Portuguese royal family.
The gardens that surround the spa buildings are the village's principal public space. Mature trees, many of them exotic species planted in the nineteenth century, shade gravel paths that wind between formal flowerbeds, ornamental pools and stone benches. The sound of running water is constant, fed by the thermal springs that surface at a temperature of around 32 degrees Celsius.
A major renovation in the early 2000s restored the spa complex and the surrounding buildings to their former elegance. The main square, with its cobbled surface and fountain, is lined with craft shops, a small grocery and cafes serving coffee and the local chestnut cake. The spa itself offers thermal treatments, swimming in mineral water pools and wellness programmes.
The surrounding forest offers excellent walking, with trails leading up through the trees to viewpoints over the valley and the coast beyond. The microclimate in the valley is noticeably cooler and damper than on the coast, and the vegetation is correspondingly lush. Ferns, mosses and wild flowers thrive in the humid conditions, creating a landscape that feels more like northern Portugal than the sun-baked Algarve. The village is a popular day trip from the coast, particularly during the summer when the cool, shaded valley provides welcome relief from the heat.
