The Algarve has a well-established and growing network of international schools that cater primarily to the children of British, northern European and other expatriate families, offering English-medium education following British, international or American curricula. For families relocating with school-age children, the availability of quality English-language schooling is often a decisive factor in the decision to move, and the Algarve's provision is among the best in southern Europe outside major capital cities, reflecting decades of demand from the region's large international community.

The largest and longest-established international school in the region is the Nobel International School Algarve, located in Lagoa in the central Algarve. Nobel offers the full educational range from pre-school through to sixth form, following the English National Curriculum at primary level and offering IGCSEs and A-Levels at secondary level, alongside the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for students who prefer the IB pathway. The school occupies a modern campus with extensive sports facilities including swimming pool, tennis courts and playing fields, and has a strong academic track record, with students regularly progressing to universities in the UK, Portugal, the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe. Class sizes are smaller than most UK state schools, typically fifteen to twenty students, which allows for more individualised attention.

Other notable international schools include the Algarve International School (formerly Aljezur International School) in Barao de Sao Joao near Lagos, which serves younger children through to IGCSE level in a smaller, more intimate village setting with an emphasis on personalised learning and outdoor education. The Vale Verde International School in Burgau offers an IB-aligned curriculum with a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability. In the eastern Algarve, options are more limited but include the International School of the Algarve near Faro and the Escola Internacional Sao Lourenco near Almancil, which follows a bilingual Portuguese-English curriculum and is popular with families who want their children to become fluent in both languages while maintaining English academic standards.

Fees vary significantly by school and age group but are substantially lower than equivalent schools in the UK or in Lisbon. As a general guide, annual tuition at a full-curriculum international school in the Algarve ranges from approximately 4,500 to 7,000 euros for reception and primary-age children to 10,000 to 15,000 euros for sixth form students following A-Level or IB programmes. Additional costs for registration, meals, school bus transport, uniforms, textbooks and extracurricular activities should be budgeted on top and can add 1,500 to 3,000 euros per year. Most schools offer sibling discounts and some have bursary programmes for families in financial difficulty.

The Portuguese state school system is also available to all resident children, regardless of nationality, and is free of charge. Portuguese state schools follow the national curriculum taught entirely in Portuguese, and some expatriate families, particularly those committed to long-term integration and who plan to remain in Portugal permanently, choose this route for all or part of their children's education. Younger children tend to acquire Portuguese remarkably quickly through immersion, often becoming conversationally fluent within six to twelve months, and many bilingual families find that their children thrive in the state system after an initial adjustment period of a few months. Secondary-age children arriving with no Portuguese may find the transition more challenging, and several international schools offer mid-year entry and language support programmes specifically for this situation.

Higher education in the Algarve is provided by the University of the Algarve (Universidade do Algarve) in Faro, which offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Portuguese and, increasingly, in English. The university has particular strengths in marine sciences, oceanography, tourism management, environmental studies and biomedical sciences, reflecting the region's economic base and natural assets. For students wishing to attend university in the UK, the international schools' A-Level and IB programmes provide direct UCAS entry, and several schools have dedicated university counselling staff experienced in UK university applications.

For families weighing their options, visiting schools in person before committing to a move is strongly recommended. Most international schools offer individual tours, open days and trial sessions throughout the year, and speaking to current parents provides invaluable insight into the day-to-day reality of each school. Waiting lists exist at the more popular schools, particularly for September entry at reception and Year 7 level, so registering well in advance of a planned move date is advisable.
