Water Parks and Theme Parks

Family

The Algarve is home to several water parks and theme parks that provide full-day entertainment for families, groups and visitors seeking adrenaline-fuelled fun in the sun. These purpose-built attractions are concentrated in the central Algarve between Albufeira and Portimao, making them accessible from most accommodation bases in the region.

Slide and Splash, located between Lagoa and Estombar on the EN125, is one of the largest and most popular water parks in Portugal. The park features a wide range of water slides, from gentle family slides to high-speed thrill rides, along with wave pools, lazy rivers, a children's area with shallower pools and age-appropriate slides, and landscaped gardens with sun loungers. Live shows, including bird of prey displays and acrobatic performances, are included in the admission price. The park operates from late May to September.

Aqualand, located near Alcantarilha between Albufeira and Portimao, is another major water park offering a similar range of slides and pools. Its highlight attractions include high-speed body slides, tube slides, a large wave pool and an extensive children's area. The park's Congo River ride, a tube-based lazy river through landscaped rapids, is a family favourite. Aqualand also operates seasonally, typically from June to September.

Aquashow Park, near Quarteira, combines water park attractions with an aerial roller coaster and other theme park rides, making it the most diverse park in the Algarve. Water slides of varying intensity, a wave pool, children's areas and the park's signature watercoaster provide the aquatic elements, while the roller coaster, indoor aquarium, bird shows and other entertainment extend the offer beyond water-based fun. Aquashow is typically open from May to October.

Zoomarine, located on the EN125 between Albufeira and Lagoa, is the Algarve's principal theme park and combines marine life presentations, rides, pools and educational exhibits. The park's dolphin presentations, sea lion and seal shows, and tropical bird displays are its main draws, alongside a selection of rides and a large pool area with beach-style entry. Zoomarine also operates rehabilitation programmes for marine wildlife and presents educational content about ocean conservation. The park is open from approximately March to November, with the fullest programme during the summer months.

Krazy World Zoo, near Algoz in the central Algarve, offers a more low-key family attraction combining a small zoo with reptiles, primates and farm animals, alongside mini-golf, a swimming pool and go-karting. It provides a quieter alternative to the larger parks and is open year-round.

Fiesa, the International Sand Sculpture Festival, held annually near Pera between Albufeira and Silves, displays enormous sand sculptures created by international artists around a different theme each year. The illuminated evening visits are particularly striking. The festival runs from approximately May to October.

Practical considerations for visiting the Algarve's water and theme parks include the importance of sun protection: sunscreen, hats and rash vests are essential, as hours spent in and around water in the Algarve sun can cause severe sunburn. Lockers, sun lounger hire and food and drink are available at all parks but add to the overall cost. Purchasing tickets online in advance typically offers discounts on gate prices. Arriving early, particularly during July and August, helps secure the best positions and avoids the longest queues for popular slides and attractions.
