Mobile Phone and SIM Cards
Practical Info
Staying connected in the Algarve is straightforward, with good mobile coverage across the region and several options for affordable data and calls. Whether you are visiting for a short holiday or settling for a longer stay, understanding the mobile phone landscape will help you stay in touch and navigate the region.
Portugal has three main mobile network operators: MEO (formerly TMN), NOS and Vodafone Portugal. All three provide good coverage across the Algarve, including the coastal resort areas, inland towns and most of the mountain areas. Coverage can be patchy in the more remote parts of the Serra de Monchique and the Serra do Caldeirao, but for the vast majority of visitors this will not be an issue.
4G LTE coverage is widespread across the Algarve, and 5G networks are being rolled out in the larger towns and cities, including Faro, Portimao and Lagos. Data speeds are generally good, and streaming, video calls and navigation apps work reliably in most locations.
For visitors from EU and EEA countries, roaming charges within the EU were abolished in June 2017 under the Roam Like at Home regulation. This means that UK visitors (post-Brexit) may face roaming charges depending on their UK provider's policy, though many UK networks continue to offer inclusive roaming in the EU or charge modest daily fees. Visitors from outside the EU should check their home provider's roaming rates before travelling, as charges can be significant.
Purchasing a local Portuguese SIM card is a cost-effective option for visitors planning an extended stay or for those whose home network charges high roaming fees. Pre-paid SIM cards are available from all three operators and can be purchased at their shops in Faro, Lagos, Portimao, Albufeira and most other Algarve towns, as well as at Faro airport, supermarkets and some newsagents.
To purchase a Portuguese SIM card, you will need to present a valid identity document (passport or national ID card). This is a legal requirement in Portugal. Pre-paid packages typically include a combination of data, calls and texts, with prices starting from around 10 to 15 euros for packages offering several gigabytes of data.
Free wifi is widely available across the Algarve. Most hotels, guesthouses and holiday rentals provide wifi, and many restaurants, cafes and bars offer free wifi to customers. Municipal wifi networks operate in the centres of several Algarve towns, and shopping centres typically provide free connectivity.
For those working remotely from the Algarve, the combination of good mobile coverage, widely available wifi and the growing number of co-working spaces in towns such as Faro, Lagos and Portimao makes the region a practical base for digital nomads and remote workers.
