The course occupies the heart of the 2,000-acre Quinta do Lago estate, routing through mature pine forests and across gently rolling terrain that provides natural elevation changes without imposing steep gradients. Mitchell's design rewards thoughtful play, with strategic bunkering that influences decision-making from the tee and around the greens. The fairways are generous enough to accommodate a slightly offline drive, but the ideal positioning for approach shots requires precision and planning.
The opening hole sets the tone immediately, a par four that plays slightly downhill through the pines to a green with subtle contours. The third, a par five, offers an early birdie opportunity for those who can thread their drive between the tree lines and take on the green in two. The fifth is a beautiful par three, playing over water to a well-defended green, and frequently features in discussions of the best short holes in the Algarve.
The back nine contains several of the course's strongest holes. The tenth, a long par four, has been the scene of many decisive moments during Portuguese Open competition, its length and tight driving corridor combining to produce a genuinely testing hole. The thirteenth, another par four, doglegs through the pines and requires a precise second shot to a green set among the trees. The par five fifteenth offers a final birdie chance before the demanding finish, where the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth present a trio of holes that have produced countless dramatic conclusions to tournament play.
Quinta do Lago's three courses benefit from the estate's significant investment in course maintenance and infrastructure. The South Course greens are maintained to USGA specification, and the fairways and tees receive the same meticulous attention. The irrigation system draws from the estate's own water resources, and the greenkeeping team, one of the largest in the Algarve, ensures that the course plays to championship standard throughout the year.
The estate's wider facilities complement the golf offering. The Campus, a sports and fitness complex, provides gym facilities, tennis courts, padel courts, and a swimming pool. The estate contains numerous restaurants and the Magnolia Hotel, which offers golf-inclusive packages. The famous wooden bridge across the Ria Formosa connects the estate to a pristine beach, adding a distinctive leisure dimension to any golf trip.
Practice facilities at Quinta do Lago are extensive, including a driving range with both grass and mat tees, a short game area with bunker practice, and large putting greens. The Paul McGinley Golf Academy, based on the estate, offers tuition from PGA professionals using video analysis and TrackMan technology.
Green fees on the South Course are at the premium end of the Algarve scale, typically ranging from 130 to 220 euros depending on the season. The course is popular with regular visitors who return annually, many of whom own property on the estate. Booking well in advance is recommended during the peak months from October to May, when the combination of pleasant weather, perfect turf conditions, and shorter queues creates optimal golfing conditions.
