Praia da Gale is a twin-section beach on the coast west of Albufeira, divided into an eastern and western portion by a central rocky outcrop. The beach is reached from the small residential settlement of Gale, a quieter area set back from the busier resort strip of central Albufeira. The combination of sand, rock formations and relatively uncrowded conditions makes it one of the more pleasant and versatile beaches in the Albufeira municipality.

The western section is the smaller and more sheltered of the two, a sandy cove enclosed by low cliffs and rock platforms. The rock here is the familiar Algarve Miocene limestone, weathered into shapes and hollows that are visually attractive and provide natural shade for those who position themselves at the cliff base. Rock pools form along the margins at low tide, and the snorkelling is rewarding, with small fish, crabs, anemones and the occasional octopus. The eastern section is wider and more open, a longer stretch of sand backed by low, eroded cliffs with characteristic ochre and cream banding. The two sections are connected at low tide by a route over the rocks, passable with care, or at any tide by a short walk along the cliff top path that connects them above.

The sand is golden and fine on both sections, the water clean and usually calm. The beach faces south and is well sheltered from the northwest winds that can make the west coast beaches uncomfortable and impractical for swimming. Lifeguards cover both sections in summer, and the beach holds Blue Flag status. There are beach bars on both sections, serving drinks, snacks and simple grilled meals, and sunbed hire is available. The eastern section has a more developed bar with a larger terrace, while the western bar is simpler and quieter.

The clifftop above the beach supports low scrub vegetation, including mastic, lentisk and wild rosemary, and is crossed by informal walking paths that provide pleasant strolling. To the west the coast continues in a series of small coves and rocky headlands that can be explored on foot, and the walking is agreeable if not dramatic by the standards of the Marinha coast further west. The residential area behind the beach has a number of restaurants, some of them excellent and specialising in cataplana and grilled fish, that are quieter and considerably better value than those in central Albufeira.

Gale occupies a middle ground in the Algarve beach spectrum: more developed than the wild coves of the west coast, less built-up and far less hectic than the urban beaches of Albufeira proper. It suits visitors who want good sand, clear water and reasonable facilities without the intensity and noise of the main resort beaches. The presence of the rock platforms and their marine life adds an element of natural interest that the flat, open beaches lack, and the relatively modest visitor numbers mean that finding space on the sand is rarely a problem outside the peak weeks of early August. The beach is well placed for visitors with a car who want to explore several coves in a day, with Sao Rafael, Coelha and Castelo all within a short drive or walk.
