Island beach
Praia da Ilha da Fuseta is the ocean beach on the barrier island opposite the small fishing town of Fuseta, in the eastern Algarve between Olhao and Tavira. The beach is reached by ferry from the Fuseta waterfront, a crossing of just a few minutes across the Ria Formosa lagoon. An alternative route, available at low tide only, involves walking across the exposed sandflats and a footbridge to reach the island on foot, though the ferry is the more reliable and convenient option, particularly for those carrying beach equipment.
Fuseta is one of the lesser-known towns on the eastern Algarve coast, a working fishing community with a modest waterfront, a daily fish market that operates most mornings and a handful of simple restaurants. It lacks the architectural distinction of Tavira with its Roman bridge and thirty churches, or the scale of Olhao with its cube-shaped houses and busy harbourfront, but its unpretentious character and genuine fishing-town atmosphere are part of its appeal. The ferry departure point is on the lagoon front near the main square, and in summer the boats run frequently throughout the day.
The island beach is a broad, flat expanse of fine white sand facing south towards the open sea. The water is warm and remarkably shallow, with a gentle gradient that allows wading for tens of metres before the depth reaches waist height, making it exceptionally safe for young children and non-swimmers. The waves are typically small, the beach sheltered from the direct Atlantic swell by its position within the chain of barrier islands that forms the outer wall of the Ria Formosa. At low tide the sand stretches a vast distance from the dune edge to the waterline, and the beach feels open and spacious in a way that the pocket coves of the central coast cannot match. The eastern end of the island curves towards the lagoon, and the water on this sheltered side is calmer still, almost lake-like in its stillness.
The beach has basic summer facilities: a seasonal bar selling drinks and snacks, lifeguard cover from June to September, and toilet facilities near the ferry landing. There is limited natural shade on the open beach, and visitors should bring their own parasol or shelter. The further sections of sand in both directions from the landing area are undeveloped and quiet, even in August when the central Algarve beaches are packed, and the walking along the shore is pleasant and uncrowded, with views across the lagoon to the mainland and the low hills of the interior beyond.
The Ria Formosa lagoon around Fuseta supports the rich birdlife characteristic of the natural park, and the mudflats and salt marshes visible from the ferry are feeding grounds for a variety of waders and wildfowl, including black-winged stilts, avocets and little egrets. The lagoon is also the source of the clams and oysters that are a staple of the local cuisine and appear on every restaurant menu. Fuseta's beach offers a genuine, unpackaged Algarve experience, the kind of place where the majority of visitors are Portuguese families from the surrounding area rather than international tourists.
