Vilamoura Marina is the largest recreational marina in Portugal and one of the most prestigious yacht harbours in southern Europe. Located in the purpose-built resort town of Vilamoura, between Quarteira and Albufeira in the central Algarve, the marina accommodates over 1,000 berths and serves as the social and commercial centre of a resort development that has been under continuous construction and expansion since the 1970s. The marina and its surrounding promenade represent the most cosmopolitan and international face of the Algarve.
The marina was designed as the centrepiece of the broader Vilamoura development, one of Europe's largest privately planned resort and leisure projects, covering over 1,700 hectares. Construction of the marina basin began in the 1970s and the facility has been progressively expanded and upgraded since, with significant investment in infrastructure during the 1990s and 2000s. It currently provides berths for vessels ranging from small day boats of six metres to superyachts exceeding 50 metres in length, and its shore-side facilities include fuelling stations, chandleries, a full-service boatyard with travel lift, and 24-hour security with CCTV monitoring. The marina has consistently won international industry awards, including multiple Blue Flag designations and Best International Marina awards from The Yacht Harbour Association.
The waterfront promenade encircling the marina basin is lined with restaurants, bars, cafes, boutiques, and shops, creating a lively social scene that extends from mid-morning well into the early hours during the summer season. The dining options range from casual seafood restaurants where grilled sardines and cold beer are the order of the day to upscale establishments offering contemporary Portuguese and international cuisine. The people-watching from a harbourside table, with yachts of varying sizes providing the backdrop and the evening light reflecting off the water, is one of the Algarve's characteristic leisure experiences. The nightlife around the marina is among the most active in the region, with several bars and clubs operating until three or four in the morning during the peak summer months.
Beyond its social function, the marina serves as the departure point for a wide range of maritime activities. Boat trips to explore the coastal caves and grottoes of the central Algarve operate daily during the season, as do deep-sea fishing charters, dolphin-watching excursions, sunset cruises, and sailing trips. The waters off Vilamoura are among the most popular in Portugal for big game fishing, with blue marlin, bluefin tuna, and swordfish all present in the deeper offshore waters of the continental shelf. Jet ski hire, parasailing, and other water sports are also available from the marina area.
The broader Vilamoura resort encompasses five championship-standard golf courses, a casino, extensive hotel accommodation, tennis facilities, and the archaeological site of Cerro da Vila, where Roman mosaics, the remains of a fish-salting factory, and a bathing complex are on display beside the marina. The marina area is accessible from all the major Algarve resorts by car and is particularly busy during the summer months, though the restaurants and bars operate year-round and the waterfront retains its appeal even in the quieter winter season.
